This fall, Life Is Better With Friends, founded by local mom and children's book author Birgit Sund, partnered with Book Drive for Kids, a nonprofit dedicated to increasing book ownership for children through free book fairs, community programs, and Pop‑Up Bookshops across the Austin area.
After learning about the incredible work Book Drive for Kids is doing in our community, Birgit decided to organize a book drive in support of their mission. As the author of My Friends and I, a friendship memory book for kids ages 5–12, she knows firsthand how much thought, heart, and creativity authors pour into their books and how passionate they are about supporting literacy and helping put great stories into the hands of young readers. With that in mind, she reached out to her community of children's book authors from across the nation and invited them to donate copies of their books.
The response was overwhelming, resulting in a fantastic collection of books for Austin-area children to discover, choose, and take home.
The Impact on Austin's Young Readers
In total, 245 books representing 96 different titles from 67 children's authors across the country were donated through the book drive and shared with children at Book Drive for Kids book fairs throughout the Austin area.
Students had the opportunity to browse the tables and choose a book to take home and keep. Some carefully considered every option before making their selection. Others spotted "the one" immediately.
And that's what makes these book fairs so special. Every child gets to choose a story that feels right for them. A book that sparks their imagination, makes them laugh, teaches them something new, or simply becomes a favorite.

Moments From the Book Fairs
Here are a few snapshots from Book Drive for Kids book fairs where local students had the opportunity to browse the tables, discover new stories, and choose a book to take home and keep.

How You Can Support Book Drive for Kids
Want to help bring more books to local children?
Book Drive for Kids is always looking for volunteers, community partners, and people willing to spread the word about their mission.
You can help by hosting a book drive, volunteering at a book fair, or sharing their work with local schools, libraries, and organizations.
Every effort helps put more books into the hands of Austin kids.
Meet the Authors Who Made This Possible
This book drive wouldn't have been possible without the incredible children's book authors who donated copies of their books to support young readers in the Austin area.
Below, you'll find each participating author along with their book cover, description, social links, and purchase information. If you're looking for a great new book for your child, grandchild, classroom, or gift list, we hope you'll take a moment to explore their work and support these wonderful creators, whether you buy a copy of their book, recommend them to a friend, or leave them a review.

📚 What books do you read?
🎨 What do you want to be when you grow up?
With a drawing or photo, they can make their pages uniquely theirs.

How to Stand Up to Bullying
by M. C. Ryder
Bullying. Something that is done every second, daily. Don't need a statistic to be told otherwise. Many don't even realize they are a constant victim of bullying, as it tends to get buried as an underlying emotion. Many don't realize they are actually a bully themselves. There are several references for parents to go to in order to help their children stand up against it, but there's not much for adults or depicting in why a bully is a bully in the first place. That's the first step. Before we all can stand up to bullying, we must first understand why a bully bullies to begin with.

Everyone Is Different
by LINI ABRAHAM FERNANDEZ
'Everyone Is Different' is the story of two flowers who become friends despite looking quite different from one another. Puja, a pink flower with broad leaves grows up with similar flowers in a beautiful garden flowerbed. When an unusual flower, Devi also grows in the flowerbed, the other flowers become fearful because Devi looks different. Her spiked leaves were a sharp contrast to the soft petals of the other flowers and so Devi found it difficult to make new friends.
Listening to her wise mother, Puja realizes that there is nothing to fear and that differences do not matter with good friends.
Details such as soft colors, animated facial expressions and an almost 3-dimensional appearance to each character pulls the reader's eyes towards each illustration. Children will enjoy the whimsical woodland creatures and the message of inclusion is subtle yet powerful.
Even the youngest of children can learn about diversity and acceptance through this book. It paves way for conversations and is a soothing bedtime story too.
