Austin’s Cutest Comeback: Athena’s Owlet Steals the Spotlight

Athena's Owlet
If you’ve lived in Austin long enough, you’ve probably heard whispers about her… the queen of the Courtyard… the feathered matriarch who has captured thousands of hearts. For more than a decade, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center has been home to a nesting pair of great horned owls — and the star of the show is the incredible Athena.

Each year, thousands tune in to the Wildflower Center’s live “owl cam” to watch Athena lay her eggs, incubate them, and (fingers crossed!) raise her owlets.

This year has been an emotional roller coaster. After laying two eggs in early March, the first owlet sadly didn’t make it. Then, as temperatures dropped, it looked like the second owlet hadn’t survived either — and Athena appeared to have abandoned the nest.

But then… a tiny miracle. A camera caught the slightest movement. The baby is alive!!

Follow the baby's journey.

Please Help Dart'em Up Stay in Business

We were sad to hear that Dart’em Up, one of our kids' favorite indoor fun place (read our review of Dart’em Up here), is in danger of having to close its doors forever due to COVID-19 and want to help them raise awareness of their ongoing fundraiser.

Here's a message from Richard McVay, Owner and Founder of Dart’em Up, one of the kindest and nicest persons we've met and who deeply cares about kids.
